A night out, Southampton style...

A night out in Southampton.
Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday Southampton’s ‘cool’ crowd flock to the hottest rock and indie bar the South has to offer. Unit, a dark contrast to the mainstream bars in Bedford Place is the perfect stop to look at the street style of students in Southampton. Whether it’s some statement glittery wedges or a staple brown satchel, Unit has it all.
The first outfit to catch my attention was that of first year Music Journalism student Emma Kate Jones, who described her style as a reflection of her musical tastes, inspired by artists such as Lydia Lunch and Robert Smith. 18-year-old Emma describes her style as punky - “my Dr Martens are my outfit staple, they go with pretty much everything I own, you tend to see a lot of them at Unit.” Accompanying her boots, Emma Jones was wearing a loose black blouse with safety pin detail and a tight black pencil skirt. “I like to jazz my outfits up with bright accessories, like this multi-coloured star Topshop ring and red lipstick.
Aside from Dr Martens, another staple item of clothing for the alternative scene is of course, black skinny jeans. 19-year-old Charlie Pascoe chose to spice hers up with some gorgeous Urban Outfitters glittery wedges – “I fell in love with these wedges straight away! They’re so perfect for a night out and adding a bit of sparkle to an outfit.” Part-time worker and student Charlie accessorized her outfit with a brown satchel from Primark, which she said, “Was only £7! A total bargain compared to some of the others on the high street.”
18-year-old Writing Fashion and Culture student Kim Dibble decided to go for a more up market satchel style handbag however, sporting a black leather Mulberry Postman’s lock camera bag that is “the most expensive thing I’ve ever bought, a Christmas treat from the sales to myself!” Teamed with a simple red dress and Topshop leopard print slipper pumps, Kim said her look is simply “some stand out pieces, like cut out t-shirts teamed with much simpler pieces that can be worn again and again in different ways.”
There was however a much more casual look being rocked by many of the girls there, one of them being a 21-year-old third year Southampton University student that chose not to give her name, and cringed when her outfit was photographed saying she “was dressed horrifically but came straight from work.” The look was one seen a lot in the alternative scene though so definitely had to be included. A cut-up band t-shirt of a band you’ve never heard of - the perfect shirt for any music snob or indie kid – teamed with a denim jacket, a brown satchel (there were a lot of satchels), denim shorts and Nike high tops finishing the look perfectly.
After one night looking into Southampton’s alternative scene’s fashion choices, it’s clear, as long as you can rock it, anything goes!
